David
McMurray, Dean of Students
I am
very pleased to provide a
perspective about our very special
Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario
Canada's number one ranked
undergraduate university. Laurier is
dedicated to providing an education
that is relevant in our rapidly
changing world. Our reputation is
built on innovative programs in
arts, science, business and music.
Many programs stand out as some of
Laurier's finest in business and
economics, global studies, geography
and geomatics, biology,
biochemistry, kinesiology, financial
mathematics, music therapy, biology,
archaeology, double degree programs
in business and science,
communications studies, english,
history and mathematics to name a
few. We are large enough to offer a
great range of programs, but
intimate too with a strong campus
community where you will feel
important as a person. Most of our
facilities are within a large single
city block which makes commuting to
class convenient and allows a close
comradery with your fellow students.
Our highly regarded faculty are
approachable, involved and available
to students to offer help, advice
and guidance. Laurier's strong
academic programs are backed up by
first rate teaching. A degree from
Laurier has a strong reputation
nationally and internationally. The
majority of your classes will be
taught by full-time professors.
Active in the international research
community, Laurier's faculty not
only provide new knowledge to
channel any inquiring mind, they
also prepare students for a complex
world by supporting the development
of critical thinking, personal
identity, instilling a capacity and
love of learning.
If you want to get involved outside
of the classroom, Laurier is the
place to be. The opportunities to
volunteer, to join a club, to
participate in recreation and
intramurals, in student leadership,
faculty councils and residence life
are endless. In the recent
University Report Card Survey,
Laurier received an A+ for the
overall university atmosphere.
Laurier Student Services also
consistently rank very highly in
student surveys. Laurier cares about
its students, their success and
their future careers. We offer a
wide range of resources designed to
help our students achieve their
academic and personal goals.
Wilfrid Laurier University is
located in the city of Waterloo in
the heart of Southwestern Ontario
about an hours drive west of
Toronto, Canada's largest city. In
one of the most prosperous and
fastest growing areas in the
country, the Waterloo region is rich
in local arts, entertainment,
theatre, orchestra, shopping,
restaurants and galleries. Over 20%
of people living in the
Kitchener-Waterloo region were born
outside of Canada and the university
attracts many foreign students.
Numerous restaurants and shops cater
to the international community. The
Waterloo region referred often to as
the "technology triangle" is the
home of Research In Motion and Open
Text Corporation as well as the
Centre for International Governance,
Innovation and the Perimeter
Institute for Theoretical Physics.
What's so special about Laurier is
its focus on the whole student both
academically and personally. At
Laurier with your special skills,
interests and expertise you become a
member of the community. Your
presence will enhance our diversity
and you will be encouraged to leave
your personal legacy to Laurier's
tradition of excellence.
