Bosom Buddies, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates..................
At no time is education and knowledge more important than in the
early detection and treatment of a serious illness. A group of
ladies from a variety of cultural backgrounds in Abu Dhabi have
formed a support group for breast cancer sufferers and plan to
spread awareness with two primary aims.
1. Extend a warm invitation to anyone diagnosed with breast
cancer and their families, to offer shared experiences and
answer common questions.
2. Inform the pubic about the risks, the necessity for self
examination and regular health checks such as mammograms, and
the support available through small groups of volunteers like
themselves.The ladies
involved are uniquely qualified for this task because they have
all suffered from, received medical treatment for, and are
living proof that the disease can be beaten. They have been able
to maintain a normal family life and have experienced the side
effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment for themselves.

It is a powerful message for
a newly diagnosed patient to see these ladies looking healthy
and active and realize that they were once faced with the same
frightening condition and 8 to 10 months of treatment. Issues
such as coping with losing part of or the full breast, hair loss
during chemotherapy and the effects of radiation on the skin
will appear more personal and less challenging with the ladies
offering advice on how to prepare yourself physically and
mentally to meet the challenge.
During the month of October they can be found in the shopping
malls around Abu Dhabi handing out leaflets with contact details
and ready to talk to anyone that needs reassurance or
information. Their message is simple:
